Today is what is referred to as “Blue Monday”, which is apparently the “most depressing day of the year”. According to the internet, the concept of Blue Monday started when Sky Travel published a press release in 2005 in which they claimed to have used an equation to calculate the most depressing day of the year. The equation itself took into account weather conditions, debt levels, time since Christmas, low motivational levels, and the feeling of the need to take action.
Simply put, Blue Monday is the most depressing day of the year because we’re far from Christmas, the weather is the worst (and if you’ve been living anywhere in Alberta this past week you know that’s the truth), our motivation is low, and we’ve likely stopped attempting to complete our New Year’s resolutions by now.
However, the entire concept of Blue Monday is based on pseudoscience and it isn’t actually real. Despite this, I’m sure a lot of us are feeling particularly blue this Monday (hence the dress). For me personally, whenever I have felt depressed in the past, I’d freak out about it and try and “fix myself”. Now, I realize that these feelings are totally normal emotions and I just let myself feel them and move on.
If you’re feeling particularly depressed today, just do whatever you want to do. Go for a walk outside, grab a sugary and expensive coffee that you wouldn’t normally buy yourself, go to a yoga class and relax (I'll catch you at Buddah Belly tonight), see a friend, or enjoy a piece of cake or donut completely guilt free.
Whatever you do, just realize that it’s temporary, normal, and that, as @harriskaylarose says, we’re all in this giant fishbowl together.
