A little late for Christmas pictures? Perhaps. But I tend to run behind anyway, so here we are. ;* The decorations are finally packed away in their totes, and with it, it seems, an entire decade. Time for ushering in a new one, hopefully with a skosh more wisdom and a pocketful of perspective. It’s funny how time can fly by in the blink of an eye, yet seem to stretch out for an eternity all at once. How a decade barely registers a blip on the timeline, yet holds so much within its tiny space… Or in this case, on a length of twine. Oddly enough, this card-bedecked sisal, is a marker of growth! While the 10’s (is that what we call it?) brought us to this lovely little farm house, challenged us to take on the task of educating at home, broke our hearts with two lost babies, overjoyed us with the birth of our Little Monkey, cheered us on through two graduations, grieved with us as we lost loved ones, and breathed life as we welcomed new ones into our hearts… This unassuming string-and-paper garland reminds me of how trusting God, letting go of bitterness and unforgiveness, and having just enough courage to take that first baby step can change the trajectory of your life.
You see, it wasn’t all that long ago that I was so overcome by depression and social anxiety that I couldn’t even step out onto my front porch without panicking. A trip to the grocery store would take me a week of pumping-up and motivational self-talk just to get out the door. Let’s not even discuss the evasive tactics should I spot someone in the aisles who I might know. Or… you know… one of those friendly, peppy, outgoing strangers who like to make eye contact (*GASP!*) and cheery small-talk as you reach for the same jar of peanut butter. My closest friends were online gamers, who all understood. Because, let’s face it, we were all escaping from something in the real world, if only for a short time each day (though, usually much longer). Avoiding conflict was as simple as not turning on the computer or rolling a new toon – anonymity and trying on a new persona all in one! (Continued in comments...)
